Expert Review

The SanDisk Sansa e280 does many things well and, despite some gripes, we were impressed. But if the SanDisk Sansa e280 is to compete with iPod nano it needs a few design tweaks.

Battery lasts long and is replaceable, expandable memory

Control wheel makes accessing surrounding buttons difficult

Sandisk Sansa e280 review

Great value is an argument that's hard to counter

Great value for money Superb features Easy to use

Could be more compact

The best of the bunch at the moment, largely because of its tremendous value for money

SanDisk Sansa e280 Review

Offers slick Rhapsody online music store integration, but ease of use needs improvement, and sound quality is lackluster.

Rhapsody integration ; Card slot for extra memory

Controls are uncomfortable to use ; Disappointing audio quality

The Sansa e260R would be a great player for sampling a constantly changing blend of music from Rhapsody's $15 monthly service. However, the player's low audio quality and uncomfortable thumbwheel make it hard to recommend

Sandisk Sansa e280

The Sansa range has been a favourite of a few of our staff, and the addition of an 8GB edition for the same price as a 4GB Nano is extremely welcome. Obviously it's not as slim as Apple's effort

Sandisk Sansa e280 review

The Sansa e280 is one of only two 8GB flash players on test. It's bigger than the iPod Nano, but fits comfortably into a pocket. Battery life is impressive at 18 hours, 17 minutes. However that's still more than nine hours short of the Nano's.

The Sansa e280 is a reliable MP3 player. It isn't as easy to use as the iPod Nano, but it doesn't suffer from the Nano's audio quality problems. For just £105, it's a surprisingly classy 8GB player.

SanDisk Sansa e280R Rhapsody

We liked almost everything about SanDisk's Sansa e260 flash-memory digital media player when we reviewed it in November 2006, but we slapped it with a verdict of 5 because we activated its voice recorder every time we picked the damned thing up. The...

Amazing audio and video quality, improved exterior casing, Rhapsody-enabled (go figure)

Buttons are slightly undersized and situated slightly too close to the scroll wheel

We still don’t like the e280R’s undersized buttons, which are situated too close to the scroll wheel for our not-so-big thumbs, but the audio and video quality is just as good as the e260’s, and the microSD card slot is superhandy. With a street price...

SanDisk Sansa e280 (8GB)

With a huge features list, simple design and a whole lot of expandable storage space, the Sansa e280 screams "Take me on, wimpy iPod Nano".

Memory expandable to 10GB ; One-touch recording for voice and radio ; Multiple ways of transferring files to the player

AC adaptor not supplied ; Scroll wheel not as smooth as a Nano's

The e280 is available now for the cannily crafted price of AU$379 -- one dollar cheaper than the 8GB iPod Nano. Take that, Apple.

Why I Picked the Sansa e280 As My Latest MP3 Player

This story starts off with bad news: I left my 2GB iPod Nano on a plane recently. Don't worry, I'm not too torn up about it since I got it as an office Christmas gift. Now I need to find me a new portable audio player of some sort, because I'm not...
