Dell Inspiron 14 5000 is a stylish thin-and-light for the budget-minded

The 14 5000 is another example of how Dell's Inspiron lineup offers good specs and nice looks while still being reasonably portable and affordable. Though, it would be nice to have a few more configuration options.

The Dell Inspiron 14 5000 series is a bit more attractive than your average mainstream laptop. It's just thin and light enough to make short trips to the coffee shop or around campus manageable.

Screen quality is overall disappointing. Configuration options are very limited. Though the keyboard itself is good, there might be too much flex for some.

For those in need of an inexpensive thin-and-light laptop for home or school (but not necessarily the thinnest or lightest), the Dell Inspiron 14 5000 series is worth putting on your list despite its imperfections.

Dell Inspiron 14R-5437 review: It's no barn burner, but it runs a good long while

Here's a solid, utilitarian, all-purpose laptop that favors function over looks. It's not overly swift, but it runs for a whopping 9 hours on a single charge.

Super-long battery life ; Attractive industrial design ; Very good input ergonomics

Mediocre benchmark performance ; Heavy for a 14-inch notebook ; Resolution limited to 1366 by 768

Dell Inspiron 14R-5437

Ten hours of battery life in a well-equipped, affordable 14-inch desktop replacement laptop. That's the Dell Inspiron 14R-5437 in a nutshell.

Nice Price. Almost 10 hours battery life. Removable battery. Optical drive. Good friction on screen hinges (no screen bounce)

Low 1,366 by 768 resolution screen. USB 2.0 and 3.0 ports are same color. Non-backlit keyboard

The Dell Inspiron 14R-5437 is a desktop replacement laptop that can go the distance. With a 6-cell removable battery pack and a power sipping fourth-generation Intel Core i3 processor, the Inspiron 14R-5437 has the power to run for almost ten hours....

Dell Inspiron 14z-5423

The Dell Inspiron 14z-5423 ultrabook is built for speed. Unfortunately, it sacrifices battery life for raw multimedia and 3D power, which is costly in the long run.

Excellent 3D performance for an ultrabook. HDMI-out port. Third-generation Intel Core i5 processor. Discrete graphics. Full-size Ethernet port. Skullcandy-branded audio

Lags competitors in battery life. Not backlit keyboard. Relatively heavy. Some bloatware

Dell Inspiron 14 5000 Series Review

The Dell Inspiron 14 5000 Series might be best defined as "good enough."

Quiet ; Long battery life ; Heat dissipates well

Display needs more clarity and richer colors ; Too heavy ; Poor wireless card reception ; The Dell Inspiron 14 5000 series is one of those low-cost thin and light notebook PCs designed for those who want a large screen but not concerned about...

The Dell Inspiron 14 5000 series is one of those low-cost thin and light notebook PCs designed for those who want a large screen but not concerned about portability. At $699.99 for a Core i5 device weighing nearly 5 lbs. it's more useful as a computer...

Dell Inspiron 14z Ultrabook (5423)

Ability to upgrade to SSD, Core i7, discrete graphics ; Great value for what's included

Battery life could get worrying with more powerful components ; Annoying flaps on some ports ; Design makes it seem like a toy

Just like the 13z, for the price involved, the 14z does well. The main sticking point is the battery life, which has been outgunned by competitors.
